Bright & Bohemian Girl’s Bedroom

Let’s just make this an official announcement, the days of being conservative with color and design in my house are over!

At this stage, my house has just become a place for my crazy design experiments! A safe testing ground to push me as a designer and try out weird stuff. I know bold hues and crazy design ideas aren’t for everyone and I understand. But for me? I have always been a lover of bold color and now I’m completely open to trying things a little different and edgy in the smaller and closed off spaces of our home (bedrooms and bathrooms etc).

This is my oldest daughter’s room. When we first moved my daughter into this room I just threw a neutral paint color on the wall to freshen it up from the beige nightmare it was but I was an exhausted pregnant lady and wasn’t completely sure where I was going with this room design yet. This is basically my before photo because this room was a temporary office for my husband while we worked on renovating our basement.

It’s taken about a year to finally get to a finished point and I think my main distraction was being inspired by TOO many things. That’s the problem with designing my own home – I like too many things and have a hard time nailing down a style because I fall in love with so many new style trends and I just want to try them all!

The starting point for the design was the IKEA minnen bed. I really loved the classic yet modern look of it. From there I also knew that my daughter has one beloved stuffed animal that is a Kangaroo and my husband served a mission for the LDS church in Australia so it seemed so perfect to give the room an ode to Australia in the art and details. I took an Australian map my husband had saved from his trip and framed it with some wood doweling. From there it took me a while bring the rest together but my style is very eclectic and collected and so like it takes time to build a collection of anything it took time for me to pull all my ideas together. Here is my mood board of the pieces that I chose to create the bohemian feel I was looking for.

Inspiration often comes slowly and often at weird hours of the night! About a month ago I came across a few rooms with half-painted walls and FELL. IN. LOVE!!! It was the final piece of my design puzzle! My color scheme already had a “primary colors” feel but with coral instead of red and a golden hue for the yellow. I had several blue items in the room already so I decided to go all in and use coral as my wall color. As I painted it, I kept going from moments of pure excitement to panicking and questioning all my design choices! Luckily I had a few fellow design friends help me through my panic to create this final masterpiece!

I am in LOVE with how her room turned out! It may not be for everyone, but when your client is a 3.5-year-old princess that lives life at FULL VOLUME and in FULL COLOR, it fits perfectly! The wall color is “Coral Reef” by Sherwin Williams and it is so cheery that it makes me smile every time I walk past her room! For the white paint, I used “Mandi White” – A unofficial custom mix created by Mandi Gubler from the blog Vintage Revivals. My daughter must not have fallen far from the tree because she already has her own collection of little trinkets and souvenirs gifted to her by grandparents and friends. I used all of her own pieces to style the room. I found the bookshelf by a dumpster and I brought it back to life with some paint and the mid-century dresser was a Kijiji find for $20! The Kangaroo print is from an Etsy shop called Shak arts that makes beautiful animal and landscape prints. The bedding is the PROVINSROS duvet cover from IKEA.

This map adds a sentimental vintage touch to the room, and for the tutorial on how to make one for yourself click here. I added a pom-pom garland to the top for visual texture and whimsy. The toy camera was found at Goodwill for 75 cents and it even fit perfectly with my color palette.

I added touches of gold in the small sculptural details of the room like the lamp and letter “a”.

On the other side of the room, I created a reading nook with the IKEA BRYNE net. I filled it with handmade poufs and pillows, then I added some tassels to the top for a whimsical touch.
