DIY Bohemian Painted Rug.
My One Room Challenge Reveal was a big post and there were so many little details that went into the styling of it, so I wanted to share a quick tutorial on one of them – how I DIYed my own rugs with paint.
I had been trying to find an outdoor rug that had a boho style at a price I could afford, but anything I found was either a tacky design or too expensive. With a tight timeline, I had to get creative and decided to shop in my own house to see what I had on hand. I had this IKEA rug that I had bought years ago and it was just sitting in our empty guest room.
I liked that it had a neutral palette but it needed a bit more pattern to fit the style I wanted. I took some white exterior paint that I had leftover and used painters tape to mark off some areas that I wanted to add some thicker stripes and patterns to.
Next, I took a foam brush and made a stacked line pattern down a few rows. to finish it off, I used the end of a paintbrush to add dots along another section.
I was working with a mudcloth type pattern in mind, but I really just made it up as I went. Stick with basic shapes and lines and it will give you a very modern geometric look.
I did this to another IKEA rug I had and gave it a few pops of color. I love how it turned out. It is now my doormat out the backdoor.
If you’re bored with your area rug or on a tight budget, grab some paint and give this a try!
