DIY Sunburst Light Fixture

When I was making over my daughter’s room I wanted to upgrade the light, but on a budget.  I was searching through Pinterest for a sunburst light and saw this gorgeous one but gasped at the $750 USD price tag!  Then I remembered my Blogger friend Erin made a similar sunburst light using wood shims, so I decided to try and create my own.

This light fixture was sooo easy and looks like million bucks! I wish I had done it sooner.

Supplies Needed:

1 round frame (mine was 9″ diameter)

100-200 skewer sticks

Hot glue gun

Rustoleum Gold spray paint

First, I took a dollar store mirror I had on hand and popped out the mirror.  Then I started gluing on the skewer sticks.  I started with the center points and spaced them evenly and then I added in the other rows and made each subsequent row short than the last to create the sun wave effect.

A tip I thought of after to keep the skewer sticks spaced evenly would be to use some sort of spacer because the glue will squish unevenly. I tried my best to eyeball the distance, but a spacer would have been helpful.

I ended up using some paper scraps on the back to push in the glue and keep my hands from burning as you can see above.

If I did this again I would trim each row a bit smoother so there aren’t any skewer ends sticking out but it will be hidden so it’s not too much of a big deal.

Next, I sprayed everything with my go-to gold spray paint- Rustoleum Metallic Gold! It’s my favorite Gold paint!

I had my husband remove the base plate too so I could spray paint the edges so that they were all gold.

Once it was dry we brought it back and installed the light like normal.

Before connecting the wires one of us held the sunburst up on the ceiling (so it didn’t stab any eyes during the electrical) and then after the wires were connected it just sat in the back of the base plate and everything fastening back to the ceiling. If video explanation is more your speed I have a highlight on my Instagram page explaining it more.

I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

This was such an easy way to turn a basic builder light into something special! It honestly completes this room!

If you try making this light fixture I’d love to see it!
