DESIGN,  ROOM REVEALS

A Surprise Mother’s Day Room Makeover with Valspar!

The past year has been undoubtedly rough on everyone, but probably the hardest on Mothers.  With all the requirements of daily life, and then all the extra demands that the pandemic has brought, I think every Mom out there could use a real vacation!

I feel very blessed and grateful that our family has been able to continue working throughout this crazy year and so I wanted to pay it forward in some way.  I felt inspired to try and do a room makeover for someone who could really use and so I reached out to some amazing brands to make it all possible.

The person that kept coming to mind was a friend from our church congregation.  She has two teenage daughters and works full-time helping some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community.  Her husband also had to move to Texas to continue working in his field after there was severe job loss in some sectors of our country.  Since he is so far away they have only been able to see each other once in the past year.  She is an incredibly kind and caring person, and I can’t imagine how hard this has been on her and her family and so I reached out to her daughter and started coordinating everything so we could give her the feeling of getaway in her own bedroom this Mother’s day!

I generally prefer to plan fabrics and paint samples in person but since it was going to be a surprise I relied on my photoshop skills to find the right design.  The design style I decided on was ‘Japandi’ – which is a mix of Japanese and Scandinavian.  I chose this because she (the mother) served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Japan years ago and has strong ties to the people and the culture.  The Scandinavian element will give a very minimalist feel, as I want this room to feel like a retreat, and the less furniture and extra items in the bedroom the better in my opinion!

Here is my initial mood board.

Now before I show you the reveal, here is a shot of the room before.  We helped her clear some of the clutter by donating some things and then helped organize the rest. (Binge-watching The Home Edit on Netflix a few months ago came in handy.)

Then I brought in the big guns – aka my husband, to help me complete the makeover in a day! We put in a solid day of work but it was sooo worth it! Can you even believe this transformation?! 🙂 Ta-da!

We painted the room ‘Du Jour’ 7002-6 by Valspar Reserve Interior Paint and Primer.  It is incredible paint! If you followed me on Instagram when I was painting you could see how amazing the coverage is! This white covered a purple wall in ONE COAT! We still had to touch up some areas with another coat but I was very impressed! This Valspar product is made with their premium stain-blocking formula and has outstanding resistance against scratches, scuffs, and scrubs to ensure your hard work lasts.

Another thing I love about Valspar paint is its exclusive availability at Lowe’s Canada.  It’s so convenient to be able to pick up paint and everything else you need for your home projects all in one place!

The color ‘Du Jour’ is a great neutral white that doesn’t lean too creamy or too cool, it’s perfectly in the middle! Having a crisp white paint color really brightened up the room and created a relaxing minimalist feeling.

Art that the mother had collected from Japan and had been keeping for years was hung around the room.

I kept the bedding neutral and then added some bold patterns to the curtains and pillows.  The bedding is from IKEA.  Her daughter told me that she loved the color Teal so I added that in some of the textiles. The pattern on the curtains is a Japanese chinoiserie pattern and I love the touch of tradition it adds to the modern elements in the room. The curtains are from Spoonflower and the link to them is here.

Around the TV we added a couple of picture ledges and we painted them the same color as the wall and then filled them with art.  It takes the focus off the TV and gives a place to display special family pictures as well.

Here’s one more fun before and after!

The bedding and lights were donated by IKEA and the curtains were donated by Spoonflower, and I just want to say THANK YOU to them AND A HUGE THANK YOU again to Valspar who made this makeover possible!

This was such an amazing experience to be a part of! I can’t wait to do it again!
