Abstract Tree Ring Art

The approach of Fall has me in a crafting frenzy lately to finish all my projects that involve being outdoors somewhat, and as I was re-stacking some of our firewood the other day I remembered this Tree Ring Art I’ve been wanting to try all summer.  My intention was to make a print that showed more of the tree rings but it turned out a bit more abstract, either way, I’m pretty happy with the result!

For this project, you will need a tree stump or a small log (the weirder shaped, the better), some paint and a roller, and some paper.  The first thing you’ll need to do is sand the end of it to smooth out any bumps or loose bark.

Next, roll on some paint.  Then, carefully set your paper on the stump and rub vigorously so that all the paint is transferred to your paper.  Lastly, carefully peel back the paper to reveal your print.

The result is quite beautiful!

They kind of have a Fall feel to them too, maybe even a bit Halloweenish? I like to change the decor with the season so I might use them in my decorating this year!  I really love how the wormholes in the one on the right create a really nice figure-ground concept.

I also tried a print on a huge stump that we still had laying around the yard from a tree we cut down.  The only renovations we have really done on the outside of our house have been cutting down a massive spruce tree that was taking over our front yard, and this stump was the only part left from it, as it was too big to burn in the fireplace.  Once again the tree rings didn’t show up but the cut lines from the chainsaw created a pretty cool abstract design.

I’m pretty obsessed with how these turned out! I think I might try a few more in some fun colors to create more abstract art.

These are so easy to make!  They can add a fun abstract piece to your gallery wall or maybe a bit of modern edge to your Fall/Halloween decor.

Either way, I hope you try it and have fun while you do!
