Moodboard + Plans for my Little Girls’ Bedroom Refresh
My 2 youngest daughters have been asking for a bunk bed for a while so that they can have more room for play in their room. I’m not a huge fan of bunk beds but I figured we could give it a try. I started looking on Facebook marketplace but didn’t find anything at a reasonable price so I put a pause on that project. Then a few weeks ago a friend posted that she had a bunk bed to give away for free. I scrolled past the post at first then went back and claimed it a few minutes later. It wasn’t exactly the style of bunk bed I had been considering, but I can’t resist free furniture and I figured I could tweak it to work for us.
The bunk bed is the Mydal bunk bed from IKEA. It was missing a few screws but luckily we live 5 mins from IKEA so we just stopped in one day and picked up some new ones in their spare parts section.
I had just planned to swap the beds and call it good… BUT my reputation precedes me and my daughters started asking for new paint colors like I did for their big sister. The original color on the wall was chosen by my oldest daughter about 5 years ago when we moved her into that current room. The younger two haven’t gotten a say in the color of their room yet so I figured we could make a few changes.
My middle daughter picked yellow and my youngest picked purple. I told them we probably won’t paint the walls that color but I’ll find a way to work it into the design. I started looking for inspiration in the form of a rug because I knew I would probably want an area rug to hide the old carpet since their beds wouldn’t be hiding that much of it anymore. I came across the Rosemarie rug in Graphite/multi from the Chris Loves Julia x Loloi collection and my jaw dropped. It had the perfect combination of neutral muted purples with warm gold and rust tones. I used that as my jumping-off point and built the rest from there.
My plans right now are to paint the bunk bed yellow, add some wood details to a nightstand I found at the Restore and paint it a light lilac tone. I also want to DIY a striped wallpaper feature wall with paint in the same yellow color as the bed.
I also want to add some books shelves so they can see the title of the books – I’ve learned that trying to keep them on a shelf with the spine showing never works for little kids because they usually need to see the front cover to know what book it is, so this will make it easier for both of us; they can find the books they need and hopefully keep it cleaner for my sanity. I will also be changing up some of the art on their gallery wall and possibly adding a new ceiling light and some wall sconces. Their room has only had paint updates since we moved into our house so it might be a good time to modernize it a bit more.
I’ve linked everything below along with these adorable sheets that I added to the mix the other day. They’ve both just had a plain fitted sheet over their mattress cover for years, but since we are finally past the potty training stage ( Hallelujah! ) I figured we could get them a proper set of sheets. You can see the adorable touch of whimsy the sheets add to the mix of colors and patterns in this photo I snapped below. I haven’t finalized all the details yet but it gives you a pretty good feel for the vibe I’m going for – Modern and colorful with a touch of vintage and whimsy.
