Our Guest Room Reveal with Sherwin-Williams

Reveal day is finally here! It’s been quite a journey with this room! What started out as “I’m just going to fix the seams in the drywall” (famous last words)…turned into a full room makeover of course.

Let me give you a recap: when I started this project I reached out to Sherwin Williams to collaborate and they were so great to work with.

Sherwin-Williams is my go-to for paint. The quality and coverage you get are seriously unmatched! And paint is probably a great place to start in explaining my design of this room. My starting point was the paint color. I knew I wanted an olive green, slightly moody bedroom, and I spent quite a while trying to find the right shade. I bought several test samples and then looked at them over and over in all different lights; ultimately, it came down to two choices: ‘Rosemary SW6187’ and ‘Oakmoss SW6180’. Rosemary has a lot of cool undertones; so, in my space, it was looking a lot more like a deep teal. Oakmoss, on the other hand, has warm undertones, so it comes across as the perfect warm olive green in the light in our guest bedroom. This is why it is SO important to test your paint samples! Paint can look completely different in different lighting.

‘Oakmoss’ won my heart; and, although I was still a bit nervous about it (since almost everyone on my Instagram stories had voted for ‘Rosemary’ when I was having trouble deciding), I knew I had to go with my gut to create the vision for this room I had in my head. And WOW, was my gut right on this one! It is the most beautiful green paint! Literally, it is exactly how I envisioned it. And the coverage was phenomenal — which I expect from Sherwin-Williams having used their products for years — but sometimes green shades can take an extra couple coats to cover just based on their particular pigments. Not this paint though. 2 coats and it was olive green perfection! I used the Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior Latex paint which is a premium paint-and-primer-in-one that offers exceptional washability and coverage. The Emerald line also contains anti-microbial agents that inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the surface of the paint, which is an incredible quality to have on the wall of a basement bedroom since basements are often a bit damper than the rest of the house.

Here is where the room started. It was just a basic bedroom that we had been renting to my younger sister for a while.

We renovated our basement a few years ago and the contractor did a horrible job on the drywall (even after we made him come back several times to fix his work), but it was livable; so, we just cut our losses and left it since we would be renting it out anyway. Once my sister moved out, I decided I wanted to fix the drywall seams; after psyching myself up for it one day, I just went for it. I’ve drywalled once before; but, it was years ago, and I forgot how awful it is—so dusty and brutal on the arms! I managed to feather out most of the bad seams and brought the room to a much more approvable level.

Next, I used some leftover pine lattice from our pergola from our Spring One Room Challenge to make a box molding feature wall. I really despise math and measuring things, so I’m so proud of myself for mapping out, measuring, and cutting all the angles for the box trim (and a bonus was that it was free since it came from my scrap woodpile—recycle, reuse, reduce!).

Then I painted the whole room in ‘Oakmoss’. I used satin finish on the walls and semigloss finish on the doors and trim. Once the room was painted then the rest of my vision came to life.

And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the AFTER!

I am just giddy over this room! I feel like it embodies ME in a bedroom; the colors, the textures, everything! It sounds silly to say, but this room honestly brings me so much joy.

Now, let’s take a moment to appreciate this headboard! I wanted the headboard to be a vintage floral fabric with a modern touch and I found the perfect fabric on Spoonflower. This pattern is called Fable Floral in Vintage cream by artist Esther Fallon Lau. I’ll be sharing a tutorial for the headboard soon so you can make your own too. I paired it with a classic stripe throw pillow that brings a modern touch to the mix of patterns. I kept the rest of the bedding and curtains neutral to create a fresh hotel feel.

I love the tone on tone drama that is created by painting the trim and door the same color. It really ups the design to a whole new level.

I created the gallery wall with the headboard in mind. I wanted them to play off each other in color and imagery. I found the perfect prints from Juniper Printshop. Especially Olivia and Flora. I juxtaposed their bright floral tones with some more modern art pieces from Etsy and a few of my own souvenirs and favorite quotes. Next to the dresser, I placed a $25 vintage chair that I scored from the Habitat for Humanity Restore. It gives a perfect spot for guests to sit while dressing or rest a bag on. Here is a similar one. The raw wood tones pop so beautifully off the green wall.

This room is quite small so instead of an area rug, I put a cozy runner beside the bed to give a soft spot for feet to land in the morning. A runner is a great option for beside your bed if you can’t afford a large area rug or if your room is small like mine. I found this one on Amazon. The nightstands were a vintage find, but here is a similar one.

Figuring out the lights for this room was especially tricky. I thought I wanted a table lamp but nothing that I found looked right. My husband helped me work through my design block, and we found these beautiful and affordable pendants on Amazon. We didn’t have the option to hardwire them so I used a “magic light trick” I have seen other designers use where you stick a puck light inside a pendant and voila lights that look hard-wired without all the work.
