A Rainbow Bedroom Makeover for my Oldest Daughter.
My oldest daughter has been begging for her own room for a while so during the summer we decided to make the switch and put the two little ones together and give her, her own space. I honestly didn’t want to do anything design-wise but she is actually very interested in design and organization and kept asking for a “rainbow room” so I figured I could do a small refresh. I said goodbye to the Moody Nursery that this room was before and got to work.
I’ve been wanting to scrape the popcorn ceiling for ages and since the room would be empty for a bit I decided to try. I won’t be sharing any tips on that because I think ours had previously been painted so it DID NOT come off easy! Ugh. It was a mess and took several layers of patching to fix it, but I got it done. It’s still not perfectly flat but good enough for me. From there I gave everything a nice coat of white paint! I used Valspar in the color “De Jour”. It’s a beautiful white that is bright but still slightly warm so it still feels cozy and inviting.
Then I took the rainbow theme and ran with it! I made it a little more “abstract rainbow” by not literally putting rainbows everywhere but instead incorporating rainbow colors and patterns everywhere. I also made one color a bit stronger than the rest. I chose the mustard yellow from the curtains and then repeated it more than the other colors around the room.
Ta-Da!
The wall hanging was really inspired by the works of Natalie Miller as pictured below. Her abstract weavings are unbelievable! I don’t know how to weave and figured trying to learn that would is quite complicated so I found a fairly easy way to give the look of layered weaving. I have a highlight for how I made it on my Instagram and I’ll be sharing a more detailed tutorial on my blog soon.
The rainbow bedding I found on amazon. It came as a “bed-in-a-bag bundle” with a reversible quilt, sheets, and pillowcases for only $50! The nightstand and bed frame were Facebook marketplace finds and the rainbow pillow is old from H&M, but here is a similar one. The curtains are from IKEA and they look a little intense on the website but in person, they are the PERFECT mustard yellow!
The light fixture turned out better than I had hoped! I was inspired by the sunburst light fixture my friend Erin made here, but I wanted one that was a bit lighter in weight so I used a round mirror frame, a lot of hot glue, and some skewer sticks to make mine. Then I finished it off with my favorite Rustoleum Gold spray paint. Tutorial coming soon!
To lean into the mustard color more I found this beautiful fabric on Spoonflower and recovered this cute chair I found at the Restore. The desk was one my mom found for free. It was an orange-colored stain before and my daughter requested “plain light wood” so I sanded my heart out to get it to look like this.
For the gallery wall I wanted it to have a couple of rainbow pictures but mostly just have at least one frame with each of the colors of the rainbow and then when you see it all together it looks like a big rainbow.
I found some fun quotes on Pinterest and had them printed out to add to the Pinboard and inspire her when she is doing homework.
Although I left the walls and furniture white I really took care in every detail of this room to make it feel like a rainbow shining light and beauty into my daughters’ life each day. I wanted the colors in the art and textiles to envoke joy and inspire her to be a light to others around her before she heads off to school.
