Entryway Makeover with Spoonflower (And Wallpaper tutorial)

This post was sponsored by Spoonflower, all opinions are my own.

The main level in our home has gone through a few decor changes but the entryway has been a bit neglected, so it’s been high on my list of things to freshen up. I’ve also been wanting to try out removable wallpaper, so I reached out to Spoonflower for some help.

Here is my Entryway before.

It was functional and simple; however, if you’ve been here for a while, you probably know that I like to change things often! I really wanted to take this space to the next level style-wise.

So here it is now! Eek! I’m so obsessed! Before it was a boring corner, but now it has its own design moment.

Spoonflower was amazing to work with; if you’ve heard of them, you probably know you can order custom fabric from them. But did you know you can also order custom wallpaper and bedding as well? Additionally, they now also offer an incredible array of home decor products!

Spoonflower was started in 2008 with the idea that anyone can create, upload and print their own designs! This process supports independent artists, and it has allowed them to have an endless inventory of patterns for you to choose from! It is such a neat concept; and, if you need a specific color or pattern size, you can simply contact the designer and request a custom change! You can create a completely unique pattern every time!

Their new line of home decor products will include knife-edge throw pillows, flanged throw pillows, throw blankets, and curtains. The pillows that I have featured here are the flanged throw pillows.

The pillows are great quality and are hand-made in the USA. Spoonflower also allows you to customize the fabric type that you want the pattern printed on. The two pillows I used were printed on Linen cotton canvas fabric and can be found by following these links Tweed Pattern Pillow, and Bird Pillow.

The Inky Wallpaper reminded me of clouds; the bird pillow seemed to fit so perfectly with it. Then, I added the Tweed pillow to give the eye a rest since it is more subdued; however, it has the same colors, so it still compliments the other patterns (Side note: I’ve been obsessed with the trend of inky watercolor wallpaper for a while—I even tried to make my own pattern in my daughter’s nursery using paint; however, it turned out much harder than I thought, and ended up being a DIY-fail haha. It’s meant to be a wallpaper pattern, not a DIY paint project.)

Spoonflower offers two kinds of removable wallpaper: a smooth, water-activated kind and a peel-and-stick kind, plus a traditional wallpaper option. I used the smooth, water-activated kind.

Here’s a quick tutorial about the process of installing it.

First, grab a friend and set aside some time for the install.

Next, unroll the paper (pattern side down) and completely wet with water using a paint roller.  Make sure you thoroughly wet all of the paper, especially the edges.

Then, fold over the ends of the paper without creasing the edges. This is called “booking” the paper. After booking both ends, set it aside for 3-5 minutes to allow the glue to activate.

Then take your paper and start applying it to the wall. Start on the left side of the wall and work your way to the right, making sure to match up the pattern as you go.

Unbook the top end of the paper and line it up with the edge of the ceiling and then smooth it against the wall.  Once the ceiling edge is aligned, then unbook the other end of the paper and continue smoothing it down the wall, being sure to press out any bubbles as you go.

I bought a wallpaper smoother from Lowes for $3 and it made this process so much easier!

When you apply your next piece, you will overlap it by 3/4″.  Make sure your pattern is matched up and then repeat the above process with your second piece, and so on.

Allow your wallpaper about 3 hours to dry before you trim the excess off. Then, stand back and admire your work! 🙂 It is definitely a two-person process, but it turned out being a lot easier than I was expecting!

Now, here are some more glamour shots of my entry that show off these amazing products from Spoonflower.

This is the view from the front door as you enter my house. It gives you a pretty exciting hello as you walk in! Also pictured is my new door color! It was a custom mix from old paint I already had, but it color matches to Sherwin-Williams “Hunt Club”.

I painted the bench this gorgeous greyish-blue to tie in with the other blue accents in my main living area.  The color is “Grays Harbor” by Sherwin-Williams.

The mirror I found at a thrift store and then spray painted it black and the hooks are from amazon. I’ll link them here. Also pictured are these baskets I found at IKEA! They now hold all my kids’ shoes and have saved me from constantly tripping over tiny shoes every time I come in the door!

And here’s a shot further back to show how all the colors in the entryway were inspired by the color palette that is already going on throughout the main level of our home, and now it flows together as one cohesive space.
