How an Interior Designer can help you find your home style.
Do you know what style you like? Or, have you ever wondered what style you should decorate your home in? If so, talking to an Interior designer can give you some clarity!
There are lots of Internet quizzes out there that claim to give you the answers, and they might be right some of the time. But, the world of Interior design and home renovations is a vast and sometimes confusing one, so if you want some real answers call up an Interior designer.
Most Interior designers offer an initial consultation at a flat rate. This is usually an hour-long meeting and a great opportunity to pick their brain about all things design. This consultation can be a part of a longer design process or can be booked as a one-off thing. Sometimes you may have a lot of ideas of what you want and just need an expert opinion on how to incorporate them. You may also have no idea where to start, either way, a short consultation can give you the guidance you need.
Here are some ways that an Interior designer can help you figure this out during the consultation:
Look around your home.
One of the first things I tell clients if they don’t know what style they like is to look around their home or specifically in their closet! The colors and patterns of the clothing you wear tell you a lot about the tones and textures that you like to be surrounded by.
Is your closet filled with neutral tones? – A neutral home palette might be for you! Or is it more colorful? – A few splashes of color in your home will probably feel so joyful to you!
In addition to your closet, look around your whole home and see what common threads are there. Do you gravitate to more modern fixtures? vintage pieces? or a mix of both. Take note of the results and look for those common elements when you are searching for design inspiration.
Ask the right questions.
Another way I help clients narrow down their preferences is through a client questionnaire. This is a list of questions that I send out over email or ask in person during a consultation with a client. It covers a variety of topics like color preferences, furniture styles, and pictures of spaces they may be inspired by. After learning their preferences I can point them in a direction of the style that they may be interested in. It might seem similar to those online quizzes but it is graded by a human with real-life expertise, not a robot so it’s going to be a lot more accurate. 🙂
Also, don’t be afraid to ask a designer questions about what they think is best for your space. We pride ourselves on being experts in our field and have acquired a vast amount of knowledge from a post-secondary school and real-world experience in all the details of home design.
Show you real-life examples.
When you are meeting with a designer you can ask them to show you specific examples of what different styles are. You could also gather inspiration from Pinterest or google and show them to a designer and together you can discuss what elements you like from each image.
