ORC Spring 2020 – Week 3 – Holes, Window boxes and thrifted furniture
One Room Challenge Week 3! We finally made some progress on the foundation for the deck. My husband works full time during the week and most things are at least a two-person job so we are trying to be weekend warriors and get as much done on the weekend as we can.

This past weekend we rented an auger and my husband and a friend drilled the holes for the deck footings. It went quickly but was definitely hard work. They drilled down about 4 feet so that the footings can be below the frost line to avoid the deck shifting in our extreme Canadian weather.
It might seem like we aren’t going very fast but we are doing all the prep work and then in a couple of weeks we have a crew of friends coming to help with the actual building of the deck and knock it all out with us.
While my husband is busy throughout the week I’ve been trying to pull together all the little details. This week I made a planter box from some scrap wood we had leftover. It’s not worthy of a tutorial but I’m proud of it! I haven’t really built anything with wood since high school so it seemed like a big accomplishment. I want to improve my DIY woodworking skills so this was a great place to start. I measured my window and then added an inch as I wanted to come past the window slightly. Then I cut all the pieces and made a basic box shape and screwed them together.
Another win for the week was scoring this outdoor loveseat for $50 off Kijiji (Canadian Craigslist). The wicker is a little beat up but the cushions are in perfect condition! Finding a sweet thrifting deal is so exhilarating. 🙂
This weekend we will pour the concrete footings and power wash the house exterior to get it all clean and ready for painting… YUP, we are painting the house too! (I’m crazy I know, but I have 5 more weeks to get all this done so why not right? Haha. ) This was another last-minute addition to our project scope, but, with updating the exterior yard it just felt wrong to leave the house siding untouched. I’ll be collaborating with Valspar paint for this project and I’m so excited to take you along! More details on that to come.
